Another Bravo! Brian. I taught in Upper Sandusky from 1981-1991… the atmosphere was completely different then… I could write a book about it… maybe I should. It affected me so much that, when I left that job, I earned a Master’s in Counseling and did my dissertation on ‘Creating a Positive Educational Environment for LGBT Students’… it was published by ERIC… so I guess, in a sense, I did write a book.
Bravo for being ahead of your time! I'm thankful I was able to have so many unique perspectives shared with me so quickly once I left for college. I went from not hardly ever seeing anyone who wasn't white to having a roommate from Taiwan within a year of graduating high school.
I was a high school counselor there from 2006-2010. It was such an honor to be there for kids who didn’t know how to navigate being themselves in a conservative community. I’m so proud of the growth that the community has shown over the years - like many small, rural communities, I know there is work to do, but to see progress is wonderful.
Great article. I love your candor and honesty. Our family attended the Pride festival on Sunday. It felt great to support the LGBTQ+ community. I hope it's an annual event and applaud this years founders.
Thank you Linda. I've always felt it was important to be honest about my feelings with my columns. It builds trust. I'm glad you were able to make it out on Sunday. Wish I'd seen you while I was there. I'd have said hello! :)
Wow, Brian. This is incredible - thank you for sharing this.
I was a high school counselor at USHS for about 5 years & I just can’t even describe what an honor it was to be a safe person for students who may not have had others that they could be their true selves with. I also remember a time or two when a parent was in my office & broke down crying because they had just found out that their child was gay & they just wanted to make sure their child knew that they were fully loved and protected. There were so many beautiful moments that were shared that I’ll be forever grateful for. I’ve also learned to give people more credit for their ability to learn & grow.
I’m all too aware of the risks that LGBTQ kids & adults face, but the show of acceptance & love that Upper Sandusky put on undoubtedly saved a life (or more than one). 🩷
Beautiful Brian! I was out of town and wishing I could also be there:). Being open to all people and their experiences is a lifelong journey, may we continue to grow in love and peace:)
I'm very happy to hear that they're already planning for next year. My heart is full hearing how successful the inaugural event was all things considering.

Another reason we need to meet up for coffee, my friend.

I love the Ted Lasso explanation! That show touches my heart strings. 😊❤️
I've probably watched it 20 times all the way through at this point. I think I might have a problem. Either that, or the show is that damn good.
